Vision is the most powerful system of sensory information processing. The significant part of the high brain structures are involved in encoding and decoding visual information. Visual image recognition and space and motion information are of greate importance for the survival of the organism and the adaptation to environmental changes. The research team of the Department of Sensory Neurobiology studies the human visual system: the visual information processing of color by the short-wave cones; the processes of coding the spatial structure of the images and the dynamics of visual information processing; the perception of visual motion and the changes in its speed and direction; the recovery of the 3D shape of objects and their spatial layout in static and dynamic conditions. The research involves the study of the brain mechanisms involved in visual information processing and their interaction with other cognitive processes, visuomotor coordination, and modulation of brain activity in normal and pathological deviations in visual information processing, the age-related changes and the compensatory mechanisms that ensure optimal coding and encoding of information, visual information processing in autism and other developmental disorders, the visual deficits in color and spatial vision of patients with hypothyroidism.
